What Is Gynecomastia?
Introduction to Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia):
As a leading national provider of body contouring via smartliposuction, Dr. Khalifeh sees hundred of men per year wanting elimination of an overdeveloped chest area. A lot of the men have done research online, and therefore know that the condition is referred to as gynecomastia, or in cases of more fatty tissue, pseudogynecomastia. The following section is an introduction to our surgical approaches to the treatment at DCcosmetics.
Causes of Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia):
Most gynecomastia is idiopathic, meaning that no cause is found, and typically starts early in life and persists. Most men do not get treatment until later in life when they are financially independent because the condition is not covered by the majority of insurance plans. All men have glandular tissue, which is supposed to in-volute. In gynecomastia, this male glandular tissue persists and even grows. Ultrasounds to confirm presence of glandular tissue as well as some hormonal tests are obtained if the patient gets a medial workup, but often a clinical diagnoses consisting of palpation and history is sufficient. In the cases where the condition has not changed for years, and the treatment is for cosmetic/confidence concerns, a workup is not necessary for all patients.
Psychological Effect on Patients:
My gynecomastia patients often report being embarrassed at the condition for many years, and I find that my gynecomastia cases very rewarding as it helps the affected male feel more confident in public after surgery, even without a shirt. I have treated many men that finally sought treatment when they felt that the condition was inhibiting their self confidence and family life. Often the treatment is delayed because men are not used to thinking about getting “cosmetic surgery.”
Treatment for Cases of Pseudogynecomastia:
For cases when the majority of pinchable chest tissue consists of fat, a possible treatment is laser liposuction with the smartliposuction machine. This is done awake after numbing the patient . This addresses the fatty components well. The glandular elements of the breast are not as easily extracted with laser lipo alone, therefore laser lipo works for mild cases only, or in cases where the patient understands that glandular tissue will remain. In general, I recomend this treatment only in a few select cases.
Treatment for Gynecomastia:
For moderate to severe cases of gynecomastia, Dr. Khalifeh favors a combination of liposuction combined with direct excision of the glandular tissue via a crescent shaped incision that gives him a direct acess to raise the skin in a uniform fashion off the glandular tissue, visualize the pectoralis muscle, and remove the glandular tissue. We offer both procedures under anesthesia or done done awake under local anesthesia (numbing medication). Dr. Khalifeh does the majority of the cases under local anesthesia with mild oral sedation. The procedure takes typically around 3-4 hours to perform. The cost of the procedure ranges from $4,000 to $5,500 depending on the extent of the breast development.

Reviews of Gynecomastia Surgery
“Having gynecomastia surgery with Dr. Khalifeh was one of the best decision I ever made. It’s not just the obvious times that I feel better–the pool or the beach — it’s every day! When I put on a shirt in the morning I don’t have to think about whether it’s too tight or makes me feel uncomfortable in front of others. I just pick a shirt and put it on without worrying about it for the first time in years. I look in the mirror and don’t worry if my chest looks too big or if people are going to notice. Everyday I am reminded that it was a good choice and I’m glad I got it done!”

What to Expect at Your Male Breast Reduction Initial Consultation in Washington DC
Prior to having a male breast reduction with Dr. Khalifeh in Washington DC, you will meet with Dr. Khalifeh. You need to provide him with your entire medical history and be candid about your lifestyle choices. Dr. Khalifeh may be able to determine if one of your medical conditions or lifestyle choices is causing gynecomastia to occur.
Medications that can cause gynecomastia include anabolic steroids and estrogen. Lifestyle choices such as smoking marijuana and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to the development of breasts in men as well. If he determines that one of your conditions, medications or lifestyle choices is causing your gynecomastia, male breast reduction surgery may not be necessary. He may recommend a lifestyle change before you undergo a male breast reduction surgery at our Washington DC facility.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Dr. Khalifeh usually performs male breast reductions while his patients are under oral sedation, using local anesthesia. He will make tiny incisions around the nipple and other pertinent sites of the chest. Dr. Khalifeh then places a small metal tube (cannula) inside the fatty tissue. He uses liposuction to remove the excess tissue under the breast. He may also choose to excise some of the tissue through a crescent shaped incision. Some patients are candidates for laser liposuction. The male breast reduction procedure at our Washington DC office usually takes between three or four hours. Dr. Khalifeh sutures the incisions, which eventually dissolve on their own.
Male breast reduction surgery can be completed as an outpatient procedure. If this is the case, a driver must accompany you to the facility.
Common Side Effects of a Male Breast Reduction
You should expect some:
The majority of the side effects from your male breast reduction surgery will subside within a week or so, however some of the numbness or swelling could last as long as six months.
Dr. Khalifeh will give you a compression garment to wear following your male breast reduction. Dr. Khalifeh will inform you how long you need to wear this garment; usually it is one or two weeks after your male breast reduction near Washington DC. This garment gives your tissue the support necessary to remain in their new position. It helps your skin adjust to your chest’s new contours that Dr. Khalifeh created during your male breast reduction procedure, which reduces the odds of your skin becoming loose. Wearing your garment as prescribed is essential for the success of your male breast reduction procedure.
